A Simpler, Smarter Approach to Fat Loss (That Actually Feels Good in Your Body)

by | Mar 30, 2026 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

There’s a lot of noise when it comes to fat loss.

Tracking everything.
Cutting more.
Doing more.
Trying to be “perfect.”

But what if it didn’t have to feel so hard?

Recently, I was listening to a podcast that shared a really grounded, science-based approach—and it reflects what I see working time and time again with my clients:

👉 Fat loss becomes easier when we support the body, not fight it.

Here are some of the key principles—shared in a simple, practical way.

1. Think about volume, not just calories

One of the most powerful (and often overlooked) concepts is energy density.

This simply means:

  • Some foods contain a lot of calories in a small volume
  • Others give you more food, more fibre, more nutrients—for fewer calories

When you focus on whole, plant-forward foods like:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Legumes
  • Whole grains

You naturally feel fuller… without needing to restrict.

👉 This is why you’ll often hear me talk about adding more in, rather than taking things away.

2. Use the “preload” strategy

This is something I love because it’s so simple.

Before your main meal, try:

  • A salad
  • A vegetable/broth based soup
  • Even a piece of fruit with higher water content

This helps to:

  • Take the edge off hunger
  • Support digestion
  • Reduce how much you need to eat later

It’s a gentle way of working with your appetite—not against it.

3. Slow down your eating (this is a big one)

Most of us are eating far too quickly.

When you slow down:

  • Your hunger hormones have time to respond
  • You feel satisfied with less food
  • Digestion improves

Simple ways to start:

  • Put your fork down between bites
  • Take a few breaths before eating
  • Remove distractions where you can

This alone can make a noticeable difference.

4. Support your gut (it influences hunger more than you think)

Your gut microbes play a big role in:

  • Hunger signals
  • Cravings
  • Metabolism

When you feed your gut well, it supports you back.

Focus on:

  • Fibre-rich foods
  • Variety of plant foods (not the same 3-4 every week)
  • Whole, minimally processed meals

This is where a plant-forward approach really shines.

5. Protein + fibre = a powerful combination

If there’s one simple strategy to build meals around, it’s this:

👉 Combine protein + fibre

This helps:

  • Keep you full for longer
  • Stabilise blood sugar
  • Support lean muscle
  • Reduce cravings

Think:

  • Tofu/tempeh, quinoa & stir fry vegetables
  • Chickpeas/beans & salad bowls with kumara
  • Salmon with quinoa & rainbow slaw (cabbage, carrot, beet, kale etc)

Simple, nourishing, effective.

6. Create space between meals (in a way that suits you)

Time-restricted eating can be helpful—but it doesn’t need to be extreme.

The real benefit comes from:
👉 Giving your body time to digest, rest, and reset

This might look like:

  • 12-hour overnight fasting
  • Eating meals without constant snacking
  • Finishing dinner a little earlier

And just like I always say—this is individual.

For some, a longer fasting window feels great.
For others, especially during stress or hormonal changes, more regular meals are better.

This is about more than fat loss

One of the most important takeaways:

This isn’t just about weight.

It’s about:

  • Metabolic health & flexibility
  • Energy
  • Digestion
  • Feeling comfortable and confident in your body

When you focus on supporting your body in these ways,
fat loss often becomes a natural side effect.

Start simple

You don’t need to do everything at once.

Start with one or two:

  • Add more plant foods
  • Slow down your meals
  • Build meals around protein + fibre
  • Create a little space between meals

Small, consistent changes are what create lasting results.
